Mexico is situated just to the south of the US.  it was Originally settled by ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, most notably the Aztecs, the Olmecs, and the Maya. It was conquered by Spanish conquistadors in the 15th century. It became independent from Spain in the early 19th century. (CIA)

Mexico has many natural resources. It is the world's largest producer of silver, which is mined in Mexico's silver belt, an area that stretches from Guanajuato to Chihuahua. Mexico also used to have large copper deposits, but nowadays these are almost completely depleted. Mexico has large petroleum and natural gas reserves. The national company PEMEX exploits most of these resources. Mexico is a member of NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and the WTO (World Trade organization). Mexico's main trading partner is the US (Bernstein).
