Settlement Patterns

Picture
The highest concentrations of population are around Mexico city in central Mexico. Small concentrations along the coast in smaller cities and a few cities in the interior (Bernstein), such as Chihuahua.

Many settlements grew up around resources (such as silver), security (military outposts) and religion (churches) (Bernstein).

In the 19th century, modern farming in northern Mexico allowed for many rural settlements to spring up in that area (Bernstein).

There are many settlements along the US border that are based around maquiladoras- factories that produce goods to be sold in the US (Bernstein). Such as Mexicali and Ciudad Juarez.
